About the role

We are hiring a Tech Lead to lead all engineering, architecture, and technical initiatives, scale our publishing platform, expand our advertising offerings, and help us deliver delightful, world class experiences for our audience and contributors. This is a one-of-a-kind role for a true self starter who jumps at the opportunity to be our first technical hire, to lead and grow a team, and to contribute not only with code, but as a member of our Leadership Team, directly driving our business strategy and mission.

Our team/tech:

  • Team: One site architect/engineer (on long-term contract). You will work closely on a daily basis with our Co-founder/Chief Product Officer and Associate Product Manager. We anticipate growing the engineering team under your leadership.

  • Technologies: PHP, Drupal (7 & 8), Javascript/jQuery, CSS/SCSS, Git, MySQL, Acquia Cloud, Pantheon, AWS, Cloudflare, SendGrid, Mailchimp, Squarespace, DNS, CircleCI, shell scripting, Composer, Google Analytics.

  • You will inherit two small-medium sized Drupal codebases and will have the power to lead discussions on refactoring and/or replatforming as needed

You will:

  • Establish best practices for software development, devops, data-driven design, IT, and other technical aspects

  • Write and deploy clean, scalable code and documentation for backend and frontend site components to deliver beautiful authoring and reading experiences for our users

  • Work closely with product management team to plan features, estimate work, and clarify specifications

  • Set product roadmap for work pertaining to refactoring/replatforming, scalability, performance, security, tech debt, and general maintenance

  • Represent the engineering department within company Leadership Team, providing updates and guiding technical strategy

  • Contribute initially as a solo software engineer and eventually grow, lead, and mentor an engineering team

  • Triage and fix bugs and systems/devops issues

  • Closely monitor industry best practices, trends, and applicable technologies

Qualifications

You have:

  • A minimum of 3 years working as a software engineer on consumer-facing web applications

  • Confidence working within full stack, with emphasis on back-end, ideally PHP

  • Familiarity with Drupal, Wordpress, or other content management systems

  • Strong problem-solving skills and bias to think like an architect

  • Strong communication skills and ability to clearly describe technical problems, best practices, and your approach to non-technical colleagues

  • Ability to work independently and be the decision-maker on engineering, architecture, management, and other matters

  • Passion for Her Campus’s mission, products, and users
